LBIS, The Tempest: Your Kink Compass Type

You do not decide to have an evening. You start one, usually in the middle of something else, and by the time anyone has considered whether this was the plan it is comfortably too late to be a plan.

LBIS is Lead, Body, Intense, Spontaneous. You steer, physically, hard, and without warning.

You start things

The energy is the asset and it is worth being clear about why, because this type often gets described as impulsive by people who have not been on the receiving end of it.

What you actually supply is momentum. Most people need a run-up. They need the evening to become an evening gradually, through hints and half-signals and someone eventually saying something. You skip all of it, and the skipping is not carelessness — it is the removal of the part where either of you could talk yourselves out of it.

The physical register matters too. This is not a talker’s type. Where a Provocateur changes the temperature with a sentence, you change it by crossing the room. Whatever is being communicated is being communicated through hands, weight and speed, and it lands faster than language does.

On a good night it looks like being interrupted and then not let go of. Nothing announced. No question asked. And — this is the part people underestimate — total presence: you are not thinking about anything else while this is happening, and that is legible.

The other thing this type has, which pairs badly with its reputation, is recovery. Tempests tend to come down as fast as they went up and are often surprisingly gentle afterwards. It is a genuine strength and worth leaning into rather than treating as a change of subject.

There is a common misreading worth clearing up, because it costs this type partners. Suddenness reads, to someone who has not agreed to it in advance, as not being asked. Those are different things — one is a shared appetite for momentum, the other is a decision made by one person — but from the outside on a given Tuesday they can look identical. Everything in the next section exists to make the difference unmistakable, which is what lets you keep the thing that makes this type good rather than gradually sanding it off.

Worth knowing too that this type is more variable than most. Your good evenings depend on your own energy in a way that a Steady Hand’s do not, and there will be weeks where the momentum simply is not there. That is not a problem to solve. It is the trade you made for the weeks when it is.

The conversation you keep outrunning

Here is the problem, stated plainly. Everything good about this type depends on not stopping to check, and checking is the thing that makes not-checking safe.

That is not a contradiction, but it does mean the checking has to happen somewhere else — in daylight, on a day when nothing is going to happen, about the general case. Once done, it covers months and you never have to think about it again mid-evening, which is precisely the outcome you want.

What needs agreeing is short. What is permanently off the table. Roughly how far things can go before it needs a fresh conversation. A word that stops everything and a word that means less rather than stop. That is the whole thing, and Tempests routinely skip it because it feels like the opposite of the appeal.

The version where you skip it goes one of two ways. Either your partner plays cautiously, which is the correct response to an unmapped situation and produces exactly the tentative evenings you were trying to avoid. Or they do not, and something happens that neither of you chose — and this type has more capacity to cause that than most, because you are physical, fast and hard to slow down once moving.

The second failure is quieter: you never get to be the one who is surprised. Because you start everything, nothing ever starts on you. A significant number of Tempests discover, usually by accident, that being on the receiving end of their own energy is something they wanted a great deal and had no way to ask for.

And a pacing note. Your natural speed removes the anticipation that most of the Compass runs on. That is a legitimate trade — but occasionally taking twenty minutes to arrive at something you would normally reach in two is not a compromise. It is a different flavour of the same appetite, and most Tempests have never tried it.

What to say

Very little, and that is correct for this type. The few that matter:

  • “Come here.” — said as information, not as a question.
  • “Do not move.”
  • “Tell me if this is too much. I will not be offended.”
  • “Slower or harder?”

The third is the one to build a habit around. It costs a second, it does not break anything, and it is the entire difference between improvising and guessing. And afterwards, because the drop from your energy is steep: “Stay. I have got you.”

One phrase to avoid, because it is common in this register and does the opposite of what it sounds like: “you can take it.” Delivered mid-momentum it reads as encouragement and functions as pressure — it tells someone that stopping would be a failure of nerve rather than information you actually want. “Tell me where you are” gets the same reassurance and leaves the door open.

Who you play well with

YBIS, The Thrill-Seeker is the obvious match — they want exactly the suddenness you supply and they will not want warning either. Enormous fun. It is also the pairing that most needs the daylight conversation, because neither of you is temperamentally the one who slows things down. Assign that job to someone explicitly rather than assuming it will emerge.

YBIR, The Stoic will absorb everything you have, which sounds ideal and is the pairing to be most careful in. They will not stop you and you will not naturally stop, so the ceiling has to be agreed in advance and treated as fixed regardless of how well it is going.

YMIS, The Instigator is a good fit for a different reason: they push back, and you are immovable, and neither of you has to pretend otherwise. Just be aware that their resistance is a game and yours is not, so the frame needs saying out loud once.

Hardest: YMTR, The Cherished and YMTS, The Dreamer. Both want a psychological register and a slow arrival, and both can find your speed genuinely startling rather than exciting. Not impossible — but it requires you to do a version of yourself that is deliberately throttled, and you should be honest about whether that is interesting or merely dutiful.

Where to go next

The beginner’s guide first, and read the negotiation section specifically. It is the least exciting thing on this list and it is what buys you everything else.

Impact, from gentle to full-on covers the warm-up in detail, which is the part this type habitually skips and the part that decides how far an evening can actually go without damage.

Everyday objects suits you better than equipment: nothing to order, nothing to plan, and it keeps everything improvisable. And if the “never on the receiving end” paragraph landed, female-led play is the easiest doorway into finding out.
