The Personal Trainer: Breaking a Sweat After Hours

Close-up of a woman's oiled rear in a white thong in warm light

Nisha had hired Arjun because she needed to get stronger for a trekking expedition to Ladakh. That was the official reason — the one she put on the intake form, the one she told her friends, the one she repeated to herself every morning as she drove to the gym in Koramangala. The unofficial reason — the one she admitted only to herself, usually at 2 AM with a glass of wine and the memory of his hands adjusting her squat form — was that the gym had become the most exciting part of her day, and it had nothing to do with the deadlifts.

Arjun was a former national-level swimmer who had turned to personal training after a shoulder injury ended his competitive career. He carried the injury with a quiet grace — never complained, never used it for sympathy, just redirected his discipline from the pool to the weight room. He had the kind of body that served as its own advertisement — broad shoulders tapering to a narrow waist, arms that strained against his t-shirt sleeves when he demonstrated exercises, and the fluid, efficient movement of someone completely comfortable in their own skin. But it was more than physique. It was presence. When he entered a room, the air rearranged itself around him.

But it was not his body that kept her coming back at six every morning, dragging herself from bed in the Bangalore winter when the floor was cold and the sky was still dark. It was the way he coached. He never raised his voice. He corrected her form with gentle adjustments — a hand on her lower back during squats, fingertips on her shoulder blades during rows, a tap on her core to remind her to engage. Each touch was professional, brief, and absolutely devastating to her concentration. She would lose count of her reps. She would forget which set she was on. She would stare at the spot on her shoulder where his hand had rested and feel the ghost of it tingling for minutes afterward.

The shift happened on a Thursday evening. She had switched to evening sessions because of a work commitment — a software release that demanded her mornings — and the gym at seven PM was a different animal than the gym at six AM. The morning crowd was disciplined, focused, headphones-in. The evening crowd was social, lingering, gradually thinning. By seven-thirty, the gym was nearly empty — just the two of them and an elderly man on a treadmill who walked with meditative slowness, watching a cricket match on his phone.

The old man left at seven. The front desk attendant waved goodnight through the glass. And then it was just Nisha and Arjun, alone in a gym that suddenly felt less like a public space and more like a private one.

Nisha was on her final set of Romanian deadlifts when Arjun stepped behind her. She could feel him before he touched her — the warmth of his body behind hers, the faint scent of clean sweat and deodorant and something underneath that was simply him, male and warm and close. He placed both hands on her hips, his fingers firm and steady, and said, “Drive through your heels. Feel it here.” His thumbs pressed into the muscles of her lower back, adjusting her pelvic tilt with precise, knowing pressure, and the correction sent a flush through her entire body — a heat that started where his thumbs pressed and radiated outward to her fingertips, her scalp, the backs of her knees. It had nothing to do with exercise.

She set down the bar. The metal clanged against the rubber floor, loud in the empty space. Somewhere a speaker played the generic EDM that all gyms inexplicably favored, but it sounded distant now, muffled, as if the air between them had thickened into something that absorbed sound.

“Arjun,” she said, without turning around. His hands were still on her hips. She could feel each individual finger through the thin fabric of her leggings.

“Yeah?” His voice was lower than usual. She noticed.

“Your hands.”

He started to pull them away — the professional response, the correct response, the response his training certification demanded. She caught them. Held them where they were, her fingers closing over his wrists, feeling the rapid pulse beneath his skin. “I did not say move them.”

The silence that followed was louder than the music. It filled the gym like water filling a glass, rising to the brim. She turned slowly, his hands sliding from her hips to her waist as she rotated, and they were face to face — her skin flushed from exertion, a sheen of sweat on her collarbones, her eyes dark and certain. His eyes were darker than she had seen them, the pupil swallowing the brown until only a thin ring remained.

“I should not,” he said, but his hands tightened on her waist, his fingers pressing into the curve above her hips, contradicting his words with his body.

“I know. Neither should I.” She placed her hands on his chest. His heart was hammering beneath her palms — fast and hard and completely at odds with his controlled exterior. The contrast thrilled her. “But I have been thinking about this for three months.”

“Two and a half,” he corrected, and his voice cracked slightly on the half. “I started counting from the first session.”

The admission broke something open between them — some dam of professionalism and propriety that had been holding back a reservoir. She kissed him. He kissed her back with the controlled intensity of a man who was used to disciplining his body and was now letting the leash slip. His mouth was warm and hungry and tasted of the protein shake he had been drinking, and she did not care, she wanted more of it, more of him.

His arms wrapped around her and lifted her effortlessly — the same arms that had spotted her bench press and demonstrated pull-ups, now employed for an entirely different purpose — and carried her to the stretching area, which had the gym’s only padded surface. The mats were thick and firm beneath her back when he laid her down, and the gym lights were bright above them, unflattering and honest, and she did not care about that either.

On the stretching mats, with the mirrors reflecting them from every angle — ceiling, walls, the full-length mirror by the door — they traded the rhythm of exercise for the rhythm of desire. He undressed her with the efficiency of someone who understood the body as a physical system — where the seams were, how elastic waistbands worked, what needed to be peeled versus pulled. She pulled his shirt over his head and finally, finally ran her hands over the chest she had been stealing glances at for months — the topography of muscle and warm skin, the scar on his right shoulder from the surgery, the way his stomach contracted under her fingertips.

“You have no idea,” he murmured against her neck, his lips tracing the tendon from her ear to her shoulder, “how many times I have had to stop myself from touching you like this.”

“I have some idea,” she breathed. “I have been on the other side of that restraint.”

He was as attentive in this as he was in training — reading her responses like biometric data, adjusting his approach, finding her limits and pushing them gently, the way a good coach does. When his mouth traced the line of her hip bone, she gripped the mat and gasped, her back arching off the padded surface. When she wrapped her legs around him, he groaned — a deep, involuntary sound that vibrated against her skin and made her feel powerful, wanted, necessary.

The mirrors showed them from every angle — a kind of accidental exhibitionism that neither of them acknowledged and both of them noticed. She caught glimpses of his back, the muscles shifting under his skin as he moved. He saw the reflection of her face — eyes closed, lips parted, lost in sensation. The visual feedback added a layer of intensity that made everything feel more vivid, more real, more deliberate. There was no hiding in these mirrors, no flattering angles, no filters — just two bodies in honest, electric contact.

She came with her back on the stretching mat, his mouth on her neck, and his name in her throat — a sound that echoed off the gym mirrors and came back to her multiplied, as if the room itself was gasping with her. He followed shortly after, his forehead pressed to hers, breathing hard in a way that had nothing to do with cardio, his hands tangled in her hair, whispering her name like a mantra he had been practicing in silence for months.

They lay on the mat in the empty gym, staring at the ceiling with its harsh fluorescent lights, catching their breath. The EDM played on, oblivious. The air smelled of rubber mats and exertion and something sweeter — the shared, animal warmth of two people who had finally stopped pretending.

“I think we need to discuss my training program,” she said, turning her head to look at him. Her hair was spread across the mat, damp at the temples.

“I think we need to add a new session.” He turned his head and smiled at her — not the professional, encouraging smile he wore during training, but something softer and more private, a smile she had never seen before and immediately wanted to see again. “Private coaching. After hours.”

“How often?”

“As often as necessary to reach your goals.”

She laughed and pulled him in for another kiss, slower this time, deeper, the urgency spent and something warmer taking its place. Somewhere overhead, the gym speakers played on, oblivious to the fact that the most intense workout of the day had just ended — and the cool-down was only beginning.
